By Richard Hayes

Addiction, in any form whatsoever, is an awful condition that not only affect the person that is addicted, but also everyone around him. Nicotine, found in tobacco products, are known to be one of the most addictive substances on earth. Unfortunately, millions of people still smoke and the habit is not illegal at all. However, when they stop smoking Colorado Springs addicts will most certainly improve their quality of life.

Many people from two or more generations ago started smoking because it was seen as a sophisticated habit. Film stars all smoked, even on screen. Cigarette adverts portrayed the habit as a glamorous one, practised by beautiful people. In those days there were no restrictions regarding where people may smoke. They smoke wherever they wished, even in restaurants. Those that hated being exposed to the smoke had no recourse at all.

It took anti smoking groups many years but in the end they prevailed. Using tobacco products became unfashionable and legislation was passed in many countries, aiming to prohibit the laces where people were allowed to smoke. Manufacturers were severely restricted regarding the advertising of their products and tobacco products were subjected to very high taxes. Exhaustive educational programs helped to inform consumers about the danger of these products.

Nobody, not even smokers, will deny the many negative side effects of smoking. Smoking has been linked to a host of lung diseases and it is known to affect the heart. Pregnant smokers can cause great harm to their unborn babies. Many other vital organs are also affected. It is also a known fact that secondary smoke causes almost as much harm as the smoke inhaled by the smoker.

Many smokers admit that they are fully aware of the fact that their habit is unsocial, unhealthy to themselves and those around them and that they spend sizeable amounts on their habit. They claim that they simply cannot quit. Yet many thousands have done so successfully, even though addiction experts agree that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to mankind.

There is no shortage of programs, products and methods to help smokers quit. Some smokers use substitutes such as electronic cigarettes. Others opt for patches and gum that is said to lessen the urge to smoke. Yet others try acupuncture or hypnosis. Many organizations offer special programs to help smokers quit. There are even prescription medication that helped many smokers to finally quit.

No program, method or product will help, however, if the smoker is not determined to end the habit. He has to be motivated and disciplined. Experts agree that it is a difficult process, but with the right support and a high level of motivation it is possible to quit. The best course of action is to ask a general practitioner for advice on which program or method to follow.

Smoking is not glamorous. It causes early ageing, it numbs the taste buds and smokers cannot smell as well as non smokers. The habit is extremely dangerous to the health of the smoker and those around him. Quitting is not always easy, but the human mind can overcome amazing obstacles.
