Health and Nutritional Benefits of Eating Oily Fish

Anchovies
Rich in omega-3 oils, these fish contain calcium, iron and phosphorus. They also provide niacin, which helps with DNA repair, and selenium, for cell function.

Tuna
Yellowfin contains magnesium, phosphorus and potassium, and is a good source of protein, thiamine and vitamin B6. Albacore (bonito del norte) additionally contains vitamin B12, which helps maintain a healthy nervous system.

Herring
Herrings provide protein and vitamin B12, along with selenium and phosphorous, which contributes to DNA health.

Sardines
Sardines are a great source of calcium when eaten with the bones intact, especially for those who want to avoid a dairy-rich diet. Our sardines are fished at their fattest, tastier and with guaranteed levels of Omega 3.

Mackerel
Mackerel contains selenium, vitamin B12 and niacin, and is also low in sodium.

The use of organic cold pressed oils
Cold pressed oils are produced using traditional methods, which retain the oil's nutritional value and flavour. For example, cold pressed sunflower oil is rich in linolenic acid and vitamin E, while olive oil is rich in mono-unsaturated fats and helps to regulate cholesterol levels. Industrial oils are chemically treated and heated to high temperatures, which converts good fats into harmful trans-fats and destroys much of the oil's flavour too.

Six Popular Nutritional Supplements And Nutraceuticals

By Tiffany Gill

Nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals now make up a huge and expanding market among consumers. It is estimated to be worth around $25 billion dollars each year in the US alone. Much of this demand is being driven by affluent baby boomers and younger consumers who are willing to invest in their health and longevity. This short article will cover six nutritional supplements and some of their main benefits.

Green foods: foods such as wheat grass, barley grass, chlorella and spirulina have demonstrated a marked beneficial effect on cholesterol levels, blood pressure and inflammation. Much of this is thought to be due their high levels of the compound chlorophyll. In addition to these benefits, it also helps the blood to carry oxygen and is a powerful internal deodorizer.

Cod liver and fish oil: reams of studies have been published documenting the health benefits of fish oil. Taking it is simply one of the smartest health choices one can make. It has been shown to positively impact brain health, skeletal health and inflammation. It is rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fats and has demonstrated anti-ageing properties. Good quality fish oil is also relatively cheap and freely available.

Coenzyme Q10: this anti-oxidant powerhouse is relatively new to the supplement scene and is deserving of its huge popularity. Its main effects are on the mitochondria of the body's cells. This helps the body with energy production and is also thought by some researchers to aid with extending lifespan.

Curcumin: this is another relative newcomer that is being increasingly researched for its many potential medicinal uses. It is derived from the spice turmeric that most know as a curry ingredient. Many now know it as an anti-inflammatory compound that can be of great help to those suffering with conditions such as gout or arthritis. It also appears to be beneficial for heart health and is being extensively studied as a potential cancer-fighting compound.

Pro-biotics: huge numbers of middle-aged and older people in the US suffer with poor digestive function. Symptoms such as gas, constipation and bloating are indications that one's digestive system is not working well. This is often due to a lack of good bacteria in the gut. This can be remedied by taking a pro-biotic which will replenish intestinal flora and help restore optimal digestive function.

Glucosamine sulphate: this is another supplement that can be hugely beneficial for older people. Joint pain and impaired mobility is something of an epidemic among older folks and many look for supplements that can help. Glucosamine sulphate can help to keep cartilage in good health and thus stave off the onset of joint problems. However, as with many supplements, it may interact with certain drugs, so medical advice should always be sought before taking it.

The demand for nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals will only increase in the immediate future. Millions of people the world over are waking up to the benefits of being proactive in their health choices. By supplementing with critical nutrients they are positioning themselves that much better for longer, healthier lives.
